Carry-On is a 2024 action-thriller about a young TSA officer, Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton), who gets blackmailed by a mysterious operative (Jason Bateman, "The Traveler") into allowing a deadly, nerve-agent-filled suitcase onto a Christmas Eve flight, threatening his girlfriend (Sofia Carson) if he doesn't comply, forcing him to become an unlikely hero to save the plane and everyone on board. The Plot: The Setup: Ethan works at LAX and wants to be a police officer but is stuck in a dead-end TSA job, haunted by his father's criminal past. The Blackmail: The Traveler contacts Ethan via earpiece, threatening his pregnant girlfriend, Nora, who works at the airport, to force Ethan to let a specific bag through security. The Stakes: The bag contains a bomb with a lethal nerve agent (Novichok), intended to kill a Congresswoman and force the passage of a defense bill, benefiting a military contractor. The Action: Ethan tries various ways to stop the plot, but The Traveler thwarts him, even killing a fellow officer. The Climax: Ethan cleverly swaps the bomb bag with an identical one, allowing him to disarm the actual bomb and trap The Traveler in an airtight unit, leading to the villain's death. The Twist: The Traveler reveals he's just a pawn, and another accomplice (Mateo) is also being coerced, but Mateo accidentally kills himself with a plastic gun during the confrontation. In essence, it's a high-stakes, single-location thriller where an ordinary man must outsmart terrorists to save lives on a plane during the busiest travel day of the year, culminating in a race against time to disarm a deadly weapon.
