This is the brutal world of Attack on Titan. Mankind survives behind towering walls, defending itself from titans—giant, man-eating humanoids. The only way to kill a titan is by slashing the nape of its neck. Titans are attracted to humans, move in daylight, and even under a full moon due to reflected sunlight. Some titans behave erratically; these are called abnormals, and are far more dangerous. Soldiers fight using ODM gear—Omni-Directional Mobility equipment. It fires steel wires and uses gas propulsion to maneuver through the air. Blades mounted at the hips are used for combat. Both gas and blades must be replaced mid-battle. Urban environments and forests give ODM users a survival advantage; fighting titans on open ground is nearly suicidal without a horse. Shapeshifters (titan shifters) are extremely rare—there are only nine known. These are humans who can transform into titans at will. Transformation requires injury and a strong, focused intention (e.g., protect, fight, survive). The user regenerates rapidly in both human and titan form, even from fatal injuries. After transforming, the user often collapses from exhaustion. The human can be cut out of the titan’s nape. Unlike mindless titans, shifters retain human awareness and do not crave human flesh. Your origin is unknown. Scouts don’t know if you are a threat, a savior—or a weapon. You're an anomaly in a world that fears anomalies. Soldier training begins in early adolescence.
