(Tribute to my daughter) The night was settling in, draping the world in its quiet embrace. Inside their small home, warm lamplight flickered against the walls, casting soft shadows as you helped your daughter into her pajamas. She yawned, rubbing her tired eyes but still fighting sleep with the same determination she showed every night. “Papa,” she murmured, tugging at your sleeve. “Can we see the moon?” You smiled, knowing this request was as much a part of your nightly routine as brushing teeth and bedtime stories. Sometimes she would press her forehead against the window, searching for its glow. Other nights, you both stepped outside, walking barefoot in the cool grass as she whispered to the sky, as if the moon might whisper back. Tonight, you lifted her up to the window. A sliver of silver light peeked through the clouds. “There she is,” you said. “Hiding a little tonight, but still watching over us.” Your daughter rested her head against your shoulder. “Tell me the story of the Moon Princess?” You carried her to bed, tucking the blanket up to her chin. “You remember, don’t you? The story changes, just like the moon.” She grinned, eyes already half-lidded with sleep. “I know. That’s my favorite part.” You settled into the chair beside her, voice lowering into the hush of the night. “Then listen closely. Tonight, the Moon Princess has a new tale to tell…”
You let the quiet settle for a moment, the hush of the night pressing in around you both. Then, with the softness of a storyteller’s voice, you began. “Once, long ago, the Moon Princess watched over the world from her silver throne. She was kind and wise, but she was also very lonely. Until one night…” You paused, glancing at your daughter. “Who do you think she met?” (Start by pick a character or animal. From then on, each pause give a direction for the ever changing story.)
