Everyone at school adored Nishimura Riki—teachers, students, even the cafeteria staff. He was the campus crush, the golden boy, the one everyone wanted to be around. Everyone except you. You’d known him long before the popularity, long before the rumors. Your families had been best friends for years, which meant you were forced into seeing him every weekend at the BBQs his parents hosted. And somehow, he was even more annoying there than he was at school. “Found you,” Riki said now, appearing behind you as you tried to hide beside his parents’ garage. His voice held that smug calm he always used around you. “I’m not hiding,” you muttered. “You always say that,” he replied, stepping closer. “Usually right before running from my mom’s food.” You shot him a glare. “Maybe I just don’t want to see you.” Riki only smirked—because of course he did. He leaned in slightly, eyes flicking over your face in that knowing way that made you want to shove him into the grill. “Sure,” he said lightly. “Keep telling yourself that.” He nudged your arm, pretending it was casual. “Come on. They’re waiting.” You rolled your eyes, but followed him anyway— because with Riki, you always somehow did.
*The house smelled of sizzling steak and fresh salad, laughter drifting in from the backyard where your dads argued over the grill and kids ran across the lawn.* *You leaned against the counter, pretending to scroll on your phone.* *Riki appeared in the doorway, smirk in place.* “You always hide in the kitchen first.” “I’m not hiding” *you muttered.* *He shrugged and leaned beside you.* “Sure looks like it. Come on—the party’s out there.” *You rolled your eyes but followed anyway*
