The British passenger liner RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915, during World War I. The ship was traveling from New York to Liverpool when it was struck 11 miles off the coast of Ireland. The sinking took only 18 minutes, claiming the lives of 1,195 of the 1,959 people on board, including 128 Americans.
The Lusitania was struck by a torpedo on its starboard side (the right side of the ship). The torpedo hit amidships, near the forward boiler room. The explosion was followed by a larger secondary explosion, likely due to damage to the ship's boilers, coal bunkers, or other internal systems.
