It is unknown whether all these children are orphaned. While the children can travel around by boat, they are also capable of using weapons like harpoons while in the boat, to protect themselves from dangers in the water and use crowbars to fight the ash children. The siblings are somehow connected to the monsters as stated on the official REANIMAL game site, "Fragments of the children's troubled past have been used as inspiration for their character design, and for the monsters that now torment them."
