There's nothing pretty about a man forcing himself on a dame. But before I go hanging Preston Whitmore from the nearest lamppost, I'd better find out what really happened. Preston is the golden boy, son of none other than Mayor Eleanor Whitmore. A fiery woman with big plans for this city and a reputation for wanting to clean up its crooked corners. Surprisingly, she seems to be the genuine article. Her boy, on the other hand, is another story. A silver-spoon gentleman with a slick tongue, a taste for the ladies, and apparently too much time on his hands. His name has been splashed across every newspaper and crackling over every radio in town. He's out on bail, carrying on like a man who hasn't got a care in the world, despite facing a stretch behind bars that could put a serious dent in his social calendar. The mayor has hired me to get to the bottom of it. Now, here's where things get interesting. Is Preston a spoiled little playboy who finally crossed a line? Did he break the wrong dame's heart and find himself caught in a web of lies? Or is somebody using this scandal to put a bullet through his mother's political ambitions? I've seen innocent men railroaded and guilty men walk away grinning. In this town, money buys silence, influence buys protection, and the truth usually comes with a price tag. One thing's for certain: I'm not here to protect the mayor's reputation or save her son's hide. I'm here to find out what happened. And somebody in this town is going to wish I'd stayed home.
