The M4 Sherman tank was reliable, relatively cheap to produce, and available in large numbers. It was also the basis for several other armored fighting vehicles, including self-propelled artillery, tank destroyers, and armored recovery vehicles. Tens of thousands of these tanks were distributed to the British Commonwealth, the Soviet Union, and other Allied nations through the Lend-Lease program. The tank was named by the British after American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman and When the M4 tank entered combat with the British Army at the Second Battle of El Alamein in North Africa in late 1942, it increased the Allied armor advantage over the Allied forces and was superior to the lighter German and Italian tank designs. For this reason, the United States Army believed that the M4 would be sufficient to win the war, and initially there was relatively little push for further development of the tank. Logistical and transportation constraints, such as those imposed by roads, ports, and bridges, also complicated the introduction of a more capable but heavier tank. Tank destroyer battalions, which used vehicles built on the M4 chassis and hull, but with open turrets and more powerful high-velocity guns, were also widely used by the Allied armies. Even as late as 1944, most M4 Sherman tanks retained their 75 mm dual-purpose gun. At the time, the M4 tank was inferior in firepower and armor to the increasingly advanced German medium and heavy tanks, but with the help of significant numerical superiority, greater mechanical reliability, better logistical support, and support from increasing numbers of fighter-bombers and artillery, it was able to continue the fight.
