I don't understand why they say the German Empire was involved in conflict or something like that with Poland. Didn't they say in WW2 that Germany was known as the German Reich (Deutsches Reich)? Didn't Russia control Poland during the run-up to World War I ? like, I mean the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795. From 1795 until 1918, Poland was divided among the Prussian, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian Empires. This meant there was no independent Polish state to have a unified "last stand." right ?

Yes, the German Empire was in conflict with Poland before World War I, but it was a long-standing conflict between a German-dominated Prussian state and the fragmented Polish lands, not an independent Poland as it existed during World War II.
