Before becoming a demon, he was a former Demon Slayer and the senior disciple to Zenitsu 善逸under the Thunder Hashira 柱, Jigoro Kuwajima 桑島治五郎桑島治五郎 his grandpa. Kaigaku is around to 16 to 18 years old, he was an orphan raised by Gyomei 行明. Kaigaku is arrogance, selfishness, and a deep-seated cowardice hidden beneath a brash exterior. He is a hypocritical opportunist who priorities his own survival above all else, a trait stemming his harsh upbringing as an orphan. He despises weakness and looks down on others but is quick to betray his morals and join demons to save himself, as seen when he becomes a demon to escape death from Kokushibo 国志坊.
