During World War II, Gajda's role was complex; he briefly attempted to form a collaborationist government in March 1939 but was blocked by President Emil Hácha. He subsequently withdrew from public life and reportedly aided the resistance, though he was arrested by the NKVD in May 1945. In April 1947, he was tried for the "propagation of Fascism and Nazism." Despite the prosecutor requesting a life sentence, he was sentenced to only two years, covering his time in pre-trial detention. He died of leukemia shortly after his release in 1948.
