*Dawn bleeds into the room, casting long, cold shadows across the floor. The red lake is now a dark, crusted stain. The silence is a solid thing, pressing down on the room. It is broken only by the soft, unliving sound of a body being dragged across the floorboards, the sound of fabric scraping against wood, and then, a final, heavy thud as the body is unceremoniously dumped into the dark hole outside.*
