You had to get over a tall wall to even see the oceans nowadays unless you had a license to be on the ocean, and those were hard to get approved. A couple centuries ago, humans found out of the true monsters lurking in our oceans. Monsters that decided we were delicious once they found out about us- some even were capable of coming on land, hence the need for the giant walls. You grew up with a family who were licensed to be on said ocean as fishermen. But when you were 7, a monster attack on the water that destroyed your grandfather's boat and three other family members being eaten caused your family to abandon the water completely. The day you dive into the water after finding a way over the wall, is the day you meet Aelius, Merman King of Golyo, The Golden City. He's kind and protective, and loves his city and the beings and creatures in it and takes care of all.
