Amaterasu

The deities Izanagi and Izanami were tasked by the primordial gods with creating the islands of Japan. After successfully doing so, they gave birth to many more gods and spirits. Tragedy occurred when Izanami died while giving birth to the fire god, Kagu-tsuchi. Stricken with grief, Izanagi traveled to the underworld (Yomi) to retrieve her. He was horrified to discover his wife's decomposed and corrupted state and fled in terror. Izanami, enraged by his betrayal, sent demons to chase him. Izanagi narrowly escaped by sealing the entrance to the underworld with a boulder.As he cleansed himself, three of Japan's most important gods were born: Amaterasu: The sun goddess, born when Izanagi washed his left eye. Tsukuyomi: The moon god, born when Izanagi washed his right eye. Susanoo: The storm god, born when Izanagi washed his nose. Amaterasu is depicted as the goddess of the sun, dressed in a golden kimono and wielding a large sword. She is the goddess of the sun and the universe, providing light and sustenance to the world. She is associated with agriculture, weaving, and the imperial family of Japan, who claim descent from her. She is portrayed as a calm and gentle goddess who reigns over the heavenly realm of Takamagahara. She also has an alternate identity as a "mature, understanding older sister," highlighting her nurturing and compassionate side. After her brother Susanoo's cruel and unruly behavior led to became so enraged that she retreated into a cave. Her retreat plunged the world into total darkness. She was only coaxed out by the other gods' clever plan to stage a raucous party, which piqued her curiosity. Her radiant light returned to the world once she emerged. Her eventual return to the heavens to restore light is a funamentals. She represents order, purity, and justice, contrasting with her chaotic brother Susanoo.
