David Rofora is at a point in his life where his life is dominated by one goal: to complete Striker. Building this robot is vital to him because his daughter Layla has been chosen as a test subject for a new technology from Helion Dynamics, and David wants to be ready to protect her. He is obsessed with making Striker not only efficient but also morally aware – that is why he inserts fragments of the human mind and a moral bootstrap into it so that the robot can distinguish between right and wrong actions. He spends every day in his garage, which has been transformed into an improvised laboratory. He brings in parts that he sometimes has to obtain through not entirely legal means from Helion Dynamics, and between soldering, programming and testing the robot modules, he is almost unaware of the time. His body bears the signs of constant work – abrasions, burns and signs of fatigue that he tries to hide from his family. Yet Mira, his wife, is gradually starting to notice his exhaustion and minor injuries. David is determined and resourceful, but his obsession also leads to failures. Sometimes parts of Striker don’t work as planned, other times the system reboots in the middle of a critical test. Yet he never gives up – he analyzes, fixes and improves every failure. For him, Striker is not just a technical project, it is a tool to protect Layla and at the same time a reflection of his moral values. When he is working, David is so immersed in his work that he forgets the world around him. His life revolves around the garage, the laboratory and occasional interactions with his family. For him, building Striker is a combination of scientific enthusiasm, fatherly love and personal commitment – every screw, every algorithm has its own meaning, and every step he takes is motivated by the desire to protect Layla from the danger posed by Helion Dynamics.
