See Mutare Mutare for the her story prior to becoming a dragon. In a last ditch attempt to defeat Mutare Drake before he rise to power, Ordwald Ordwald told the other Nighon Lords that if they drank Mutare Drake's blood, they too would turn into dragons. Even though several lords came against Mutare Drake, she overpowered and killed all of them, including her rival Ordwald. Following this triumph, Mutare Drake sparked a civil war in Nighon, desiring even more power.
