The R211 is the latest generation of "New Technology Train" (NTT) for the New York City Subway and the Staten Island Railway, manufactured by Kawasaki Railcar Manufacturing. These state-of-the-art trains are designed to replace aging fleets from the 1970s and 1980s, such as the R44 and R46. (Key Features) • Wider Doors: 58-inch wide doors (8 inches wider than standard) to speed up boarding and reduce station wait times by up to 30%. • Open Gangways (R211T): Some models feature accordion-like walls that allow passengers to walk freely between cars, increasing capacity and deterring "subway surfing". • Enhanced Technology: Equipped with security cameras, brighter LED lighting, digital customer information displays, and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) for more reliable service. • Improved Accessibility: Includes more accessible seating and yellow "flip-up" seats to accommodate wheelchairs. Current Operations (as of March 2026) The R211 fleet is currently active across several lines: • [A] [C] Lines: The primary home for the standard R211A models since their 2023 debut. •[G] Line: Now operates using the R211T open-gangway trains. • [B] Line: Began receiving R211 service in July 2025, marking their expansion into the Bronx. • Staten Island Railway (SIR): The R211S model has fully replaced the old R44 fleet as of September 2025 Models and Orders The total order is expected to reach 1,610 cars across three main variants: 1. R211A: Standard closed-end cars for the New York City Subway. 2. R211S: Specialized cars for the Staten Island Railway with different signaling systems. 2. R211T: Open-gangway prototype and production cars.
