"The Raven" is a narrative poem by Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1845. The poem is about a distraught lover who is visited by a talking raven. The raven's name is "Nevermore" and it sits on a bust above the narrator's chamber door. The raven represents the unreal and the narrator's subconscious despair. The raven's repeated use of the word "nevermore" provides a key to the relationship between the narrator and the raven.
