Bruno is the young son of a Nazi commandant who moves his family from Berlin to a house near a concentration camp. From his window, Bruno sees what he believes is a farm where people wear “striped pajamas.” Lonely and curious, he explores the area and meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy imprisoned in the camp. They form a secret friendship through the fence. Bruno doesn’t understand what the camp really is — the audience does — and that dramatic irony makes everything feel heavier. As their friendship grows, Bruno promises to help Shmuel search for his missing father. To do that, Bruno disguises himself in striped clothing and crawls under the fence. What happens next is tragic and devastating, showing the brutal reality of the Holocaust and how innocence can’t survive in a system built on hatred.
