Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character, is portrayed as a mean and miserly old man who hates Christmas and refuses to give his clerk a raise. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his past, where he sees how his own greed and selfishness led to the loss of his love and his life as a recluse.
