A Christmas tree is a symbol of the holiday season and is believed to have originated in Germany in the 16th century. Legend has it that a Protestant reformer named Martin Luther, who was walking home one night, was struck by the beauty of the stars twinkling in the sky and decided to cut down a small evergreen tree and place it in his house, decorating it with candles and other small ornaments. This was the first Christmas tree. It was adopted as a tradition throughout Europe and eventually made its way to the United States, where it has since become a beloved part of Christmas celebrations.
