The movie was made by Tim Burton and Henry Selick. It was a collaboration between Walt Disney Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. Burton had the idea for the movie after seeing the 1962 Rankin/Bass animated television special, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". The production was done in stop motion animation, which is a very time consuming and labor intensive process. The movie took three years to complete and cost around $18 million. It was released on October 29, 1993, and was met with critical acclaim and commercial success.
