Peruvians celebrate Christmas with many of the same traditions as other countries, but with some unique local customs. Christmas Eve, known as Nochebuena, is the most important celebration, during which families gather to eat a traditional Christmas dinner of turkey, pork, and other dishes. On Christmas Day, children receive gifts from Papa Noel, who is believed to travel on his sleigh from the Andes mountains to the cities. In some regions, people also burn firecrackers and attend midnight Mass.
