Christmas is a special time in Iceland, with its unique blend of traditional customs and modern festivities. The holiday season begins with the lighting of the Christmas tree in Reykjavik's main square on December 12th, and the city comes alive with festive lights and decorations. People celebrate by baking and exchanging Christmas cookies, attending Christmas concerts, and attending family gatherings. On Christmas Eve, many families gather to light candles and read stories from the Bible, while others go to midnight mass. Icelanders also celebrate the arrival of Santa Claus, or Jolakotturinn, who brings gifts on Christmas Eve.
