German Christmas traditions are quite diverse, but some of the most popular include decorating a Christmas tree, exchanging gifts, singing carols, and attending church services. In some areas, people will also decorate their homes with nativity scenes or hang up small figurines depicting the birth of Jesus. Additionally, children may leave shoes out on Christmas Eve for St. Nicholas to fill with sweets or small gifts. In some places, the tradition of gift-giving is replaced with the tradition of giving treats to children who come knocking on doors asking for "sweet gifts" on Christmas Eve.
