One of the most important traditions in Italy during Christmas is the presepe, or nativity scene. People create elaborate scenes depicting the birth of Jesus, complete with figures of Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, and other biblical characters. The scenes are often set up in churches, piazzas, and other public places, and people come from all over to admire them. Another popular tradition is the exchange of gifts, called "presepi," on December 25th, the day after Christmas. These gifts are usually small, such as candy or chocolate, and are given to children.
