Christmas trees originated in Germany in the 16th century. The tradition of decorating a tree with candles and ornaments was first introduced in the 16th century by Martin Luther, a Protestant reformer, who was inspired by the beauty of a snow-laden tree. The tradition then spread throughout Europe and eventually made its way to the Americas, where it became a popular part of the Christmas celebration. The first recorded use of a Christmas tree in the United States was in 1846, when a German immigrant named William Parkinson brought one to his home in Pennsylvania.
