Before Christianity became a dominant religion, the people of Northern Europe celebrated a holiday called Yule, which was a pagan festival of winter. The Christians adopted some of the traditions of Yule, such as decorating trees and giving gifts, and eventually the holiday became known as Christmas. So in a sense, Christmas has roots in pagan traditions, but it has evolved into a much more complex holiday over the centuries.
