Elf on the Shelf typically returns to homes after Thanksgiving. They arrive with a personalized letter and a new toy for each child. The Elf on the Shelf then spends the next few weeks watching the child's behavior and reporting back to Santa about their good or naughty actions. On Christmas Eve, the Elf on the Shelf flies back to the North Pole to report to Santa, and then returns on Christmas Day to deliver a special present.
