when do you put out the elf on the shelf

Typically, the elf on the shelf is placed on December 1st, but I suggest putting the elf out on Thanksgiving weekend this year. That way, kids will have more time to interact with the elf and keep up the tradition of "elfing" throughout the month. It's all about giving children more opportunities for fun and magic during the holidays!
