when does the elf on the shelf go home

The Elf on the Shelf has to stay awake and watch over the children while they sleep to see if they're being naughty or nice. They report back to Santa each night and let him know who has been good and who needs a little more work to get on the "nice" list. Once the Christmas season is over, the elf goes back home to the North Pole with Santa.
