when was rudolph the reindeer created

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was first created in 1939 by Robert L. May. He wrote and illustrated a story for Montgomery Ward, a department store chain in Chicago, to give away to children visiting the store during the holiday season. The story was eventually published as a book in 1949 and became a Christmas classic.
