According to legend, the first Christmas tree was erected by Saint Boniface in 723 AD. Boniface was a missionary who traveled to Germany to spread Christianity. While there, he encountered a group of pagans who were about to sacrifice a young boy in honor of their tree god. Boniface intervened and saved the child, then used the fallen tree to explain the Christian concept of the birth of Jesus Christ. The people were so moved by his message that they converted to Christianity and began to celebrate Christmas.
