Wilma Rudolph was born on June 23, 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was the 20th of 22 children born to Edith and Robert Rudolph. She was the first of her siblings to be born after her mother contracted the devastating disease of polio during pregnancy. Despite the hardships she faced growing up in poverty and surviving polio, Wilma Rudolph overcame these obstacles to become one of the most iconic athletes in history.
