The Christmas tree, as we know it today, has its roots in ancient pagan traditions. In the ancient Germanic regions, evergreen trees were commonly used to celebrate the winter solstice, a time when people believed the sun was at its weakest and would soon begin to regain its strength. They would decorate these trees with lights and ornaments as a way to welcome the return of light and warmth. Over time, the tradition of decorating evergreen trees during the winter solstice evolved into what we now know as the modern Christmas tree.
