The tradition of the Christmas tree originated in Germany during the 16th century. The first recorded use of a Christmas tree was in a diary written by Martin Luther, a Protestant reformer. According to his account, Luther was walking through the woods on Christmas Eve and was amazed by the beauty of the starlit sky. He took a small pine tree home and decorated it with candles and other ornaments to symbolize the light of Christ. From then on, the tradition of decorating a tree during Christmas spread across Europe and eventually reached America.
