Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by Robert May in 1939. He was originally a promotional toy for the Montgomery Ward department store, but quickly became a cultural icon. May later wrote a children's book based on the character, which was published in 1949 and has been reprinted many times since. Rudolph has since been adapted into numerous TV specials and films, making him one of the most beloved Christmas figures of all time.
