Christmas Vacation was written by John Hughes. He was a screenwriter and director who is best known for his work on classic '80s films such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Hughes was also an accomplished playwright who wrote the script for the Broadway musical, Pretty Woman. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 59.
