why did teddy roosevelt ban christmas trees

I believe Teddy Roosevelt did ban Christmas trees at one point, but I'm not exactly sure why. He was a pretty strict president when it came to government spending, and maybe he saw Christmas trees as a frivolous expense. He was also known for being a bit of a curmudgeon, so maybe he just didn't like the idea of people having fun during the holidays.
