why didn't tim burton direct nightmare before christmas

Tim Burton was actually approached to direct Nightmare Before Christmas, but he turned it down. He felt the project was too similar to Beetlejuice, which he had just finished directing. Burton did, however, provide conceptual artwork for the film and consulted with Henry Selick on the project.
