why does rudolph's nose glow

It's a little-known fact that Rudolph's nose is made of a special kind of crystal that emits a brilliant glow when he's excited or feeling stressed. The elves have been studying it for years to try and replicate the effect, but they haven't been able to come up with anything quite like it yet.
