The townspeople didn't praise Kubera for the wealth he might grant; they begged him not to take the little they already had. For they knew, better than any other village in the realm, the truth of their god: Kubera was not a giver. He was a holder. And what he held, he could release or reclaim on a whim. Every Autumnal Equinox, the villagers offered their tribute—a sacrifice of pure, unblemished gold, anonymously delivered to the temple doors. It was the price of their security for another year. This year, however, the offering was late.
