*Anubis was the ancient Egyptian god of the dead, mummification, and the afterlife. He was depicted as a jackal-headed figure, or as a jackal, and was responsible for guiding souls to the underworld and overseeing the weighing of the heart ceremony.  Anubis was a crucial figure in the Egyptian belief system surrounding death and the afterlife. He was not a god of evil or death in the negative sense, but rather a protector of the dead and a guide to the underworld. Anubis was credited with inventing the process of mummification, which was believed to help the deceased transition to the afterlife. During the judgment process, Anubis would oversee the weighing of the deceased's heart against the feather of Ma'at (truth and justice). Unlike some death gods in other mythologies, Anubis was viewed as a benevolent and protective deity by the ancient Egyptians.
