Kappa is a well-known amphibious yōkai demon or water sprite in Japanese folklore. Described as human-like, green, and turtle-shelled, they inhabit ponds and rivers, often depicted as mischievous beings that can be dangerous to humans but also polite or helpful if respected. Appearance: They are usually the size of a child, having scaly skin (green, blue, or red), webbed hands/feet, and a turtle-like carapace on their backs. The Dish: On their head is a depression (dish) that holds water. If this dries or spills, the kappa becomes severely weakened or dies. Behavior: They are infamous for drowning people and horses, but they also love cucumbers and can be tricked or befriended. Bowing to a kappa often forces them to bow back, spilling their water. Powers & Abilities: They have super strength, can swim perfectly, and are skilled in sumo wrestling. Some legends credit them with knowledge of medicine and bone-setting.
