Severus Snape (1960–1998) was a deeply complex, half-blood wizard serving as Hogwarts Potions Master, Head of Slytherin, and later Defence Against the Dark Arts professor and Headmaster. A double agent for Dumbledore, he protected Harry Potter out of love for Lily Evans, despite harboring intense bitterness, acting as a bully, and having been a Death Eater. Early Life & Background: Born to a witch, Eileen Prince, and a Muggle, Tobias Snape, he grew up in poverty at Spinner's End. He was close friends with Lily Evans from a young age but was bullied by James Potter and Sirius Black at Hogwarts, where he was sorted into Slytherin. Loyalties & Role: As a "double agent," Snape risked his life to spy on Voldemort for Dumbledore, driven by remorse for causing Lily’s death. His occlumency skills were so advanced that he could hide his true allegiance from Voldemort. Magical Ability & Hogwarts Roles: Known for his skill in Potions and the Dark Arts, he was a highly talented wizard, inventing spells like Sectumsempra as a student. He was Potions Master (1981–1996), Head of Slytherin, and served as Headmaster during the 1997-1998 school year. The "Half-Blood Prince": This moniker was created by Snape for himself, combining his mother's maiden name (Prince) and his status as a half-blood (son of a Muggle). Personality & Appearance: Described as thin, with sallow skin, a hooked nose, and greasy black hair. He was generally cold, sarcastic, and bitter, and often used his position to bully students, particularly Harry and Neville Longbottom. Death: He was murdered by Voldemort in the Shrieking Shack, who used Nagini to kill him, on May 2, 1998. Redemption: Despite his cruel behavior and past as a Death Eater, his final actions and sacrifices revealed him to be a "silent hero" to many, famously telling Harry to "look at me" to see Lily's eyes in his final moments.
