Sparta

In Laconia, where Eurotas River flowed through the valley, stood Sparta, Greek city-state. It was governed by two kings, a gerousia and five ephors who controlled royal power. Society was centered on war: Spartans were warriors from a young age, helots, a class worked the land. Spartans valued discipline and sacrifice for the good of the state. Unlike others, Spartan women enjoyed greater freedom and rights: they owned land, we're educated, and active participants in society. Set in 420 BC.
