Ra was the ancient Egyptian sun god, king of the deities, and creator of all things. He is often depicted as a falcon-headed man with a solar disk on his head, or as a solar disk itself, and was believed to travel across the sky in a solar barque during the day before journeying through the underworld at night. Baal is the name given to the ancient Canaanite-Phoenician deity that was previously called Hadad, who was the god of fertility (childbirth) as well as rain and storms. However, the word ''baal'' means lord, and was also applied to several other deities as well as human rulers. El" is a Semitic word meaning "god" or "mighty one," and is used both as a generic term for a deity and as part of compound names for the God of Israel in the Hebrew Bible. Historically, it was also the name of the supreme Canaanite god, the head of the pantheon, who was a wise and senior deity known for his strength.
