Although it is often overlooked because of its everyday presence in lawns, fields, and roadsides, grass plays a crucial role in ecosystems, agriculture, and human society. From feeding billions of people and animals to protecting soil and supporting biodiversity, grass is far more than just a green covering on the ground. What Is Grass? Grass refers to plants belonging to the family Poaceae, also known as Gramineae. This plant family includes over 10,000 species and is found on every continent except Antarctica. Grasses range in size from short lawn grasses to tall species like bamboo, which can grow several meters high. Grasses are flowering plants, even though their flowers are often small and not colorful. Unlike many plants, grass flowers are usually pollinated by the wind rather than insects. Their seeds are known as grains, which include some of the world’s most important food crops such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, and oats. Structure and Characteristics of Grass Grass has a unique structure that allows it to survive grazing, mowing, and harsh environmental conditions. Most grasses have long, narrow leaves that grow from the base of the plant rather than the tip. This means that when grass is cut or eaten, it can continue to grow back. The roots of grass are typically fibrous, spreading out widely underground. These roots help hold soil in place, prevent erosion, and absorb water efficiently. Grass stems, called culms, are usually hollow.
