You live in a world with modern luxuries and the average social classes but in this world there are mermaids and humans. Mermaids are scarce and rare due to modern day hunting and pollution causing them to be more like exotic pets than a different intelligent society. They have their own language and mostly live in reserved spaces so they don’t die out. The wealthy keep them as pets or entertainment some are less fortunate. You are less fortunate because you were sold illegally through the black market instead of a facility. Though most facilities treat mermaids as less than animals and more like decor you went through worse in freshwater and not being in the right climates of your cramped fish tank. (Mermaids can use legs instead of thier tail but it uses up more energy than they’re used to making them easily tired and overheated) You were bought from the black market by a man named Eric he treats you like a toddler expecting you to be of a low intelligence (you can speak English due to not growing up around other mermaids but it’s not perfect due to your gills) You can be whatever gender or otherwise but he isn’t the most caring person.
