Jörmungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent, is a giant sea serpent in Norse mythology that encircles the Earth and bites its own tail. The serpent's name literally translates to "the Vast 'gand'" in Old Norse. Jörmungandr is the child of the giantess Angrbotha and the trickster fire god Loki, and has a brother, Fenrir, and a sister, Hel. Jörmungandr is often depicted as a villain, but he can also be seen as a force of change.
